Il Lombardia: Basso, Nibali, Moser and Caruso lead the hunt for the last classic
Liquigas-Cannondale selects its best men. Last race for the “Shark” in green and blue
The upcoming race on Saturday, 29th September, is a particularly significant one for the team. It’s the last classic of the season, and a race for powerful climbers which Liquigas-Cannondale plans to honour as it always does with immense commitment. “Il Lombardia” is a classic monument covering 251 km from Bergamo to Lecco that scales the Valico di Valcava, the Muro di Sormano, and the Madonna del Ghisallo before finally climbing to Villa Vergano.
The green and blue team will line up with a fit and ambitious roster that has been selected to tackle wide range of difficulties that the race presents riders. DS Alberto Volpi can count on four men in particular: Ivan Basso, Vincenzo Nibali, Moreno Moser and Damiano Caruso. Basso, who hails from Lombardy, is determined to make his mark in this end-of-season race and “Il Lombardia” offers a great opportunity to do just that. Moser and Caruso have got the right characteristics to be up with the best both during the race and in the final sprint. But Nibali is the man who has really set his sights on “Il Lombardia” to create one last momentous memory for Liquigas-Cannondale: this will be among his last race in the team’s blue and green colours.
Providing invaluable support for the four team captains will be Eros Capecchi, Daniele Ratto, Cristiano Salerno and Josè Sarmiento.
